Creating a Positive Football Environment: It Starts With All of Us
As we get ready for another exciting season of junior football, there’s something just as important as what happens on the pitch — how we behave around it.
Grassroots football is about giving children the chance to play, learn, make friends, build confidence and, most importantly, enjoy themselves. Winning is part of football, but it should never come before enjoyment, respect and the experience of our young players.
The FA is continuing to promote positive behaviour across grassroots football during the 2026–27 season, and at Milford Athletic FC, we want to play our part.
Let the children play
Junior football belongs to the children. Players need the freedom to make decisions, try things, make mistakes and learn.
Rather than constant instructions from the touchline, let's encourage them with simple, positive messages:
"Well done." "Keep going." "Great effort." "Unlucky — next one."
A little encouragement can make a big difference.
Respect the referee
Referees are an important part of every game, and many at youth level are young people themselves.
Nobody gets every decision right, but shouting at or abusing officials should never be part of junior football. Let's set a good example by accepting decisions and treating referees with respect.
Support, don't pressure
There’s a big difference between supporting a child and putting pressure on them.
Celebrate effort, good play and teamwork rather than focusing only on goals and results. Sometimes the best question after a game isn't "Did you win?" — it's simply:
"Did you enjoy it?"
We're all role models
Players learn by watching the adults around them. Coaches, parents and supporters all have a part to play in creating a positive atmosphere.
Let's celebrate the player who keeps trying, the teammate who helps others, the great save, the important tackle and the coach or referee who gives up their time.
These are the moments that make grassroots football special.
Let's make it a season to remember
Let's make the 2026–27 season one where our children feel safe, supported, respected and free to enjoy their football.
Encourage more.
Shout less.
Respect everyone.
Celebrate effort.
Let the children play.
Years from now, our players may not remember every result or goal — but they will remember how football made them feel.
Let's make sure they remember it for all the right reasons.
